During the recent City Commission Meeting on January 7, 2025, the City of Weslaco honored Captain Maria Dolores Salinas for her significant achievement in completing the prestigious FBI National Academy program. Captain Salinas, who has dedicated 24 years to the Weslaco Police Department, is recognized as the first female officer from the city to attend this elite training program.

The FBI National Academy, held at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, is an 11-week course designed for law enforcement leaders from around the globe. Participants receive advanced training in management, leadership, intelligence gathering, communication, and forensic science. Captain Salinas not only excelled in her studies but also served as the lead coordinator for international partnerships, facilitating the integration of 26 international attendees.

Her commitment to professional development is further highlighted by her completion of the challenging Yellow Brick Road fitness challenge, which includes a 6.1-mile run with various obstacles. Captain Salinas has earned 18 college credit hours from the University of Virginia through her participation in the academy.

The recognition of Captain Salinas underscores the city's commitment to fostering leadership within its police department and enhancing community safety through advanced training. As she returns with new skills and insights, the city anticipates that her experiences will contribute positively to the Weslaco community.
