Maui County officials are grappling with the future of the historic Spring House, as discussions continue regarding its potential demolition and the preservation of cultural artifacts. During a recent council meeting, members expressed a strong desire to save the Spring House, which holds significant historical value for the community. However, the property is privately owned, complicating efforts to prevent its demolition.

The county's Department of Management has initiated an intergovernmental agreement with FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers for debris removal and the preservation of Pohaku artifacts discovered in the area. This agreement is crucial as the Army Corps prepares to finalize debris removal, leaving little time for alternative preservation efforts.

Public comments collected in mid-2024 indicated a community preference for preserving the Spring House. Despite this, the private property owner has opted for demolition, raising concerns about the loss of cultural heritage. Council members highlighted the importance of retaining the Pohaku, which are culturally significant stones, and discussed plans to relocate them to county property for safekeeping.

Deputy Director Aaron Wade emphasized that the majority of surface debris has already been cleared, with only the standing walls and concrete slab remaining. Cultural monitors and archaeologists will oversee the demolition process to ensure that any artifacts are preserved appropriately.

The council also explored the possibility of a development agreement with the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, which has experience in restoring historical structures. However, concerns about the foundation's capacity to undertake such a project within the necessary timeframe were raised.

As the council navigates these complex issues, the future of the Spring House remains uncertain. The discussions underscore the delicate balance between private property rights and the community's desire to preserve its cultural heritage.
