Mandeville High School's quiz bowl team is making history as they prepare to compete in the national competition for the first time in over two decades. During the recent STPPS Board Meeting on January 16, 2025, Coach Jason Bordelon highlighted the team's remarkable journey from a small group of four members to a robust squad of 17, showcasing their dedication and growth over the past three years.
Bordelon, who has a lifelong passion for quiz bowl, took it upon himself to revive the program at Mandeville High, which had previously lost its prominence. His efforts have not only led to the team's qualification for nationals but also positioned them as the only traditional public school in St. Tammany Parish to achieve this milestone in over 20 years.
The coach emphasized that the success of the quiz bowl team extends beyond trophies. He noted the critical thinking skills, teamwork, and perseverance that the students have developed through their participation. These skills, he explained, will benefit them in academics and throughout their lives.
The board meeting also served as a platform to recognize the students' hard work and the support from their families and school administration. Bordelon expressed gratitude for the encouragement and commitment from parents who have been instrumental in the team's journey, often waking up early to support their children at competitions.
As the quiz bowl team gears up for the national stage, their story serves as an inspiring example of how dedication and teamwork can lead to significant achievements, fostering a sense of pride within the Mandeville community.
