Drones are taking flight in Montgomery County as law enforcement unveils a groundbreaking "Drone as First Responder" program aimed at enhancing public safety. During a recent Judiciary Committee session, police officials detailed how this innovative initiative allows drones to respond to emergency calls faster than traditional ground units, significantly improving response times and situational awareness.

Montgomery County Police Chief Mark Yamada and his team explained that the program, which began its pilot phase in November 2023, has already responded to nearly 2,000 calls. The drones are stationed on rooftops, ready to launch at a moment's notice, providing aerial support for 911 calls and officer-generated requests. This proactive approach allows officers to gather critical information before they even arrive on the scene.

The program utilizes advanced technology, including a software called Live 911, which enables officers in the operations room to hear emergency calls in real-time. This capability allows them to dispatch drones immediately, often arriving at emergencies within 60 to 75 seconds—much quicker than ground units, which can take several minutes.

The benefits of the drone program extend beyond speed. Officers reported that the aerial perspective has led to better decision-making and de-escalation during potentially volatile situations. For instance, in cases where suspects were reported to be armed, the drone's camera provided crucial visual information that helped officers approach safely and avoid unnecessary confrontations.

In addition to aiding in law enforcement, the drones have been instrumental in locating missing persons, including vulnerable individuals such as children with autism. The program has already demonstrated its potential to save lives and improve community safety.

As Montgomery County continues to refine this initiative, officials emphasize their commitment to transparency and accountability in the use of drone technology.
