Mount Vernon is set to transform its economic landscape with a new mixed-use development that combines light industrial space and affordable housing. During the Mount Vernon Industrial Development Agency meeting on January 9, 2025, officials discussed the project, which will feature 180 residential units alongside a significant commercial component.
The development will include 45 units designated for households earning 50% of the area median income (AMI), 121 units for those at 60% AMI, and 22 units for 90% AMI. This structure aims to provide affordable housing options for residents, with income limits ranging from approximately $54,000 to $151,000. The project also incorporates 10,000 square feet of light industrial space and a 5,000 square foot training facility, which will serve as a vocational apprenticeship program.
The training facility is particularly noteworthy, as it aims to equip local residents with essential technical and life skills, addressing a critical gap in workforce development. This initiative is designed to prepare graduates from Mount Vernon High School for careers in sustainable engineering and related fields, fostering job creation within the community.
Royal Power Energy, the company relocating its operations to Mount Vernon, will play a pivotal role in this development. With a contract valued at over $200 million from Con Edison, the company will not only assemble devices for distribution but also contribute to the local economy through job creation and training opportunities.
The meeting underscored the importance of this project in revitalizing the local economy and providing pathways for residents to engage in emerging green industries. As the city moves forward with this initiative, it aims to establish itself as a leader in sustainable job creation and education, ultimately benefiting the community at large.
