A recent bus incident at a railroad crossing in Canton has sparked significant safety discussions among school officials and local authorities. During the Canton School Committee meeting on December 19, 2024, Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCarthy provided an update on the alarming event, which was reported by a concerned parent.

The incident involved a school bus that approached a railroad crossing during poor weather conditions. As the bus came to a stop, the crossing arm descended onto the vehicle. Fortunately, there was sufficient distance between the bus and an oncoming train, but the situation raised serious safety concerns. Dr. McCarthy emphasized the gravity of the incident, stating, "Just thinking about that is incredibly scary."

In response, the school district has taken proactive measures to investigate and implement corrective actions. Dr. McCarthy noted that both First Student, the bus company, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) are involved in addressing the issue. She expressed gratitude to Principal Mulhern and Transportation Coordinator Brett McLeod for their efforts in personally contacting families affected by the incident.

Key safety improvements have already been made, including the painting of stop lines at the crossing, which were previously missing. This was coordinated between the MBTA and the town of Canton. Additionally, safety poles have been replaced to enhance visibility and protection at the crossing.

Looking ahead, Dr. McCarthy indicated that a comprehensive upgrade of the railroad crossing is necessary, stating, "In my opinion, that entire railroad crossing needs an upgrade." The school district plans to provide further updates in January regarding the ongoing safety measures and actions taken to prevent future incidents.
