City Council approves warming center operations to support homeless during winter nights

The Municipality of Anchorage has taken significant steps to enhance support for the homeless community by approving a new warming center operation plan during a Special Assembly Meeting on December 19, 2024. The initiative aims to provide a safe and warm environment for individuals in need during the cold winter months.

Under the new plan, warming centers will operate nightly from 8 PM to 8 AM, staffed by a minimum of four personnel, including a site supervisor and safety support. The centers will offer essential services such as hot beverages and blankets, ensuring that individuals have a place to stay warm and safe. Importantly, participation in coordinated entry assessments—designed to connect individuals with housing resources—is optional, emphasizing a low-barrier approach to service access.
