The City of Nogales is set to host a significant binational summit aimed at enhancing cultural and public safety collaborations between the United States and Mexico. During the regular city council meeting on January 8, 2025, council members discussed the upcoming Interalcaldes summit, scheduled for March 28-30, which will bring together mayors from various cities, including Guadalajara and Ciudad de Mexico, to foster partnerships and celebrate public safety heroes.
Maritza Liniguera, president of the Fundacion Noris Causa USA, presented the summit's objectives, emphasizing its potential to elevate Nogales' role as a leader in binational relations. The event will feature a series of activities, including a border greeting ceremony, tours of local organizations, and an awards dinner honoring firefighters from participating cities. In addition to the summit, the council approved a $2,000 in-kind contribution to support the event, which is expected to boost local media coverage and economic activity. The council also addressed other agenda items, including the approval of subgrantee agreements with the Arizona Department of Homeland Security for grant reallocations totaling over $39,000 for reimbursement of mileage and overtime.
As the city prepares for the summit, officials are optimistic about the long-term benefits of strengthened relationships and cultural exchanges, positioning Nogales as a model of innovation and unity in the region.
