Main Street residents call for action to revitalize empty shops and boost local business

Daytona Beach officials are taking steps to revitalize Main Street, addressing concerns over vacant storefronts and the need for increased business activity. During the Planning Board meeting on December 19, 2024, board members and community members discussed the current state of Main Street, which has seen a decline in foot traffic and business presence, particularly after major events like Bike Week.

One board member expressed frustration over the lack of code enforcement, suggesting that the city has allowed property owners to neglect their buildings, leading to a "dead street" atmosphere. This sentiment was echoed by local residents who highlighted the negative impact of vacant properties on the community's vibrancy. They emphasized that even businesses with lower aesthetic standards could help bring life back to the area, as any activity is preferable to empty buildings.

Community member Jenny Nasdaq advocated for a more relaxed approach to city regulations, suggesting that allowing diverse businesses, even those that may not fit traditional standards, could foster a more dynamic environment. Beeville also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance the area, including plans for a new arch sign and better coordination of city services.
