The City of Sunrise City Commission meeting on January 14, 2025, featured a significant recognition of local firefighters for their life-saving efforts. The meeting commenced with a celebratory atmosphere as the commission acknowledged the achievements of the fire department.
The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the Firefighter of the Month award for January 2025. Fire Chief John K. McNamara introduced Captain Daniel McNeil, Rescue Lieutenant Michael Dubic, Driver Operator Vincent Schaffino, Firefighter Paramedics Brian Finnerin, Alexander Facil, and Anthony Gosinski. The recognition was in response to their exceptional response to a cardiac arrest incident at a local store.
Chief McNamara detailed the events of the emergency call, noting that a bystander had initiated CPR before the fire department arrived. The crew followed established protocols and successfully transported the patient to Florida Medical Center, where further care led to the patient’s recovery and discharge within a week.
Battalion Chief Chris Arvos elaborated on the rarity and significance of such calls, emphasizing the critical nature of their work. He presented the crew with a special challenge coin shaped like a heart, symbolizing their successful intervention. Additionally, a gold coin was awarded to the patient, Mr. Riley, who was present at the meeting, marking a poignant moment of gratitude and recognition for the collaborative efforts of the emergency responders and the bystander.
The meeting underscored the importance of community involvement in emergency situations, with Chief Arvos encouraging residents to learn CPR, highlighting its potential to save lives. The recognition of the firefighters not only celebrated their dedication but also served as a reminder of the vital role that both trained professionals and community members play in emergency response.
