Staff recommended denial of the request, citing a need for a more diverse business mix in the Court Avenue entertainment district, as outlined in recent city assessments.
During the meeting, it was noted that the Court Avenue area has already seen a high volume of police activity, with 745 calls and 69 arrests reported between January and September of this year. This data further fueled opposition from local residents and the Downtown Neighborhood Association, which submitted numerous letters and comments against the bar's establishment.
In contrast, the board swiftly approved three other requests without opposition. These included a conditional use request for the Employers Mutual Casualty Company at 655 Walnut Street to sell wine and beer, and two zoning exception requests for illuminated signage by Casey's Marketing Company at 3725 Beaver Avenue and the Meridian at Gray's Landing at 425 S. 11th Street. All three approvals were granted unanimously, contingent upon compliance with staff recommendations.
