Cumberland County Schools is taking significant steps to enhance college access for students through a series of initiatives aimed at simplifying the FAFSA application process. During the recent Family Ambassadors Meeting, CCS Counseling Coordinator Kristy Newitt announced that the district has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the John M. Belt Foundation to support FAFSA application initiatives. This funding will enable the district to host five to six FAFSA application nights, providing students and families with essential guidance on completing the financial aid form.
Newitt emphasized the importance of these events, which will be held in partnership with Fayetteville Technical Community College and Fayetteville State University. The district is also planning to deploy a mobile bus from Fayetteville Tech to various high school locations throughout February, making it easier for students to access assistance. To encourage participation, the district will raffle scholarships ranging from $250 to $500 during these events.
In addition to these efforts, Newitt has created an Instagram account to engage students more effectively. Recognizing that traditional communication methods like emails and bulletin boards often go unnoticed, the Instagram platform will share information about scholarships, volunteer opportunities, and job openings, ensuring that students receive timely updates.
Newitt urged the community to dispel myths surrounding the FAFSA, highlighting that it is a valuable resource for all students, not just those from low-income backgrounds. She noted that completing the FAFSA can open doors to financial aid, including Pell Grants, which can cover tuition costs for two-year colleges.
These initiatives reflect Cumberland County Schools' commitment to supporting students in their pursuit of higher education and ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their potential. Further details about the FAFSA application nights and other related events will be shared soon, as the district continues to prioritize college readiness and access for all students.
