A powerful call for inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ community took center stage at the Montgomery County Commissioners Meeting on December 19, 2024. Jason Landau Goodman, board chair of the Pennsylvania Youth Congress, presented a comprehensive LGBTQ policy agenda aimed at enhancing the rights and resources available to LGBTQ residents in the county.
Goodman highlighted the urgency of the agenda, which includes 50 pages of detailed policy recommendations, emphasizing the need for action in light of growing concerns among LGBTQ residents following recent elections. "Since the election, there has been a lot of concern from LGBTQ residents across the county and across the Commonwealth," he stated, underscoring the importance of community engagement and awareness.
The agenda outlines 8 key policy points for the Montgomery County Commissioners and 18 recommendations for the newly established Montgomery County LGBTQIA+ advisory commission. Goodman expressed hope that these guidelines would empower the county to take meaningful steps toward inclusivity and support for its LGBTQ population, estimated at over 50,000 residents.
In addition to the policy agenda, Goodman mentioned ongoing efforts to foster dialogue within the community, including town halls aimed at educating residents about their rights and available resources. "Folks want to talk about these issues, know about their rights, and know what they can do going forward," he said, reflecting the community's desire for proactive engagement.
The meeting not only showcased the pressing need for LGBTQ advocacy but also highlighted the county's commitment to addressing these concerns through actionable policy changes. As the commissioners consider the proposed agenda, the anticipation for a more inclusive Montgomery County continues to grow.
