The county has secured a $500,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Energy Development to fund a solar field project, which is expected to generate $1.2 million in federal tax credits upon completion. These tax credits will be instrumental in financing the newly approved Aviation Academy, aimed at providing vocational training in aviation to local high school students.

The Aviation Academy, located at the former Ivy Tech site at the airport, is designed to equip students with skills for high-demand jobs in aviation, including maintenance and piloting, with salaries ranging from $60,000 to $250,000. This initiative not only addresses the local workforce needs but also positions Vigo County as a leader in aviation education in West Central Indiana.

In addition to the solar project and Aviation Academy, the commissioners discussed various infrastructure improvements at the airport, including the potential installation of an elevator to enhance accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges. The meeting also included the approval of a resolution to authorize borrowing up to $7.1 million for various airport renovations, although the actual amount borrowed is expected to be less.

Other notable decisions included the approval of a $220,000 purchase agreement for 21 acres of land behind the Vigo County Security Center, which will support future county projects. The commissioners also awarded a contract for the Old Paris sidewalk project, enhancing connectivity in West Terre Haute with funding from the American Rescue Plan.
