Southern California families on edge as Halloween burglaries surge in gated communities

Residents of San Marino are on high alert following a significant rise in residential burglaries, as discussed during the December 2024 Community Safety Meeting held by the City Council. The meeting highlighted alarming trends in local crime, particularly during the holiday season when many families are away from home.

Detective Adian Gutierrez opened the meeting by presenting disturbing video footage of recent burglaries, including a brazen incident that occurred on Halloween night in a nearby community. The footage revealed thieves targeting homes while residents were out, exploiting the absence of occupants to carry out their crimes. This type of crime, often referred to as "dinner time burglaries," typically occurs when families are dining out or attending events, leaving their homes vulnerable.

The statistics shared during the meeting painted a concerning picture. There has been a 17% increase in residential burglaries in the area, with 70 reported cases this year compared to 59 last year. Additionally, commercial burglaries have surged by 60%. The police emphasized the need for community vigilance, urging residents to secure their homes and report any suspicious activity.

The meeting also addressed the psychological impact of these crimes on victims, with residents expressing feelings of anxiety and insecurity in their own homes. Many are now considering measures such as bolting safes to the ground and enhancing home security systems.
