In a recent Davis County Fiscal Court meeting, officials highlighted the urgent need for volunteer firefighters, revealing that only 250 volunteers serve a population of over 40,000 residents outside Owensboro city limits. The call for more community involvement was emphasized, with officials urging residents to consider joining the volunteer fire department to bolster dwindling numbers.
The meeting also included a financial overview presented by Treasurer Mister Johnson, who reported a total cash balance of over $74 million as of July 31, 2024. He confirmed that the first month of the new fiscal year showed no anomalies in account activity, and all budgeted interfund transfers were on track.
The court approved several resolutions, including the establishment of 2024 tax rates for the Green River District Health Department, which will maintain the current rates for real and personal property. Additionally, a resolution was passed to participate in the Kentucky Ohio River Regional Recreation Authority, aimed at enhancing tourism and economic growth through coordinated recreational development.
A memorandum of agreement was also approved to secure $44,524 for law enforcement weapons and ammunition for the Davis County Detention Center, alongside another agreement to receive $1.2 million for water project cost overruns related to the upgrade of a significant water line in the district.
These discussions reflect ongoing efforts by Davis County officials to address community needs, enhance public safety, and improve infrastructure, all while encouraging greater civic engagement among residents.
