In a recent meeting, members of the Oakland County School Safety Consortium discussed ongoing efforts to enhance school safety and community support in the wake of recent tragedies. The consortium, comprising various educational leaders, aims to share best practices and resources to ensure compliance with state regulations and improve emergency operation plans.
One significant initiative highlighted was the implementation of Behavioral Threat Assessment Management (BTAM) teams across the district. These teams are designed to evaluate and address potential threats within schools, ensuring a proactive approach to safety. The district has taken steps to train a wide range of staff, including administrators and mental health professionals, to ensure a consistent and informed response to any concerning situations.
The meeting also addressed the district's response to a recent tragedy at a local splash pad, which deeply affected the community. In collaboration with Oakland County Emergency Management, the district opened Reuther Middle School as a command post to assist families and provide emotional support. Mental health staff were mobilized to offer counseling services, including the introduction of therapy dogs to help comfort those in distress.
Additionally, a Family Resiliency Center was established to support affected families, initially at the public works location in Rochester Hills and later moved to the board office and Reuther Middle School. These efforts underscore the district's commitment to community well-being and the importance of collaboration in times of crisis.
