During a recent council meeting, members focused on the fiscal year 2024-2025 budget for the capital improvement program, with significant discussions surrounding the allocation of remaining funds. Ben Ludke, the council policy analyst, presented the latest funding log, dated August 22, which included updates from previous meetings highlighted in blue.
Currently, there is $595,000 in unallocated funds, with proposals on the table for its distribution. One suggestion is to allocate these funds to enhance the complete streets reconstruction project. Additionally, a proposal to increase funding for the safer crossings initiative citywide by $100,000 was discussed, which would raise its total funding to $400,000, sufficient for the installation of a HAWK signal. This funding is intended to improve pedestrian safety across various locations as determined by the transportation division.
Further discussions included the Fayette Avenue improvements project, which currently has $80,000 designated for design work. To fully fund this initiative, an additional $480,000 would be required. The council also considered the international peace gardens project, which could potentially receive partial or full funding through a proposed $1.5 million investment aimed at enhancing the Jordan River area. This funding could be combined with resources from the parks bond, with the international peace gardens and adjacent Fife wetlands identified as priority areas.
The council is set to vote on these funding proposals, which aim to address critical infrastructure and safety improvements within the community.
