In a recent government meeting, two variance requests for home additions were discussed, highlighting the challenges homeowners face in adapting their properties to meet family needs.
The first petition came from a resident seeking to add an extension to their home to accommodate their mother, who has been living with them since the passing of her husband and the loss of her home due to a hurricane. The petitioner emphasized the need for more space to help their mother feel settled and heal from recent hardships. The property, located on a corner lot, is constrained by a 75-foot gas pipeline easement, limiting where additions can be placed. Planning staff recommended positive consideration of the variance request, noting that variances are common in such situations. The petition was ultimately granted, allowing the family to proceed with their plans.
The second request was made by Raj Pudota, who sought a variance for a sunroom and deck addition at his residence. The proposed addition would increase the lot coverage from 35% to 39%, which was deemed acceptable by the Carmel engineering department. The Pudota family aims to enhance their enjoyment of a lake view from their backyard. The planning staff also recommended approval of this variance, contingent upon coordination with the engineering department for necessary grading work.
Both cases reflect the ongoing need for flexibility in zoning regulations to accommodate personal circumstances and enhance living conditions for families.
