In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the urgent need for a district-wide multi-channel radio system to enhance communication and safety within school buildings. The proposal, presented by a district administrator, highlighted the challenges faced last year due to inadequate communication tools, particularly during emergencies.
The plan involves equipping all administrative staff, head custodians, second secretaries, maintenance personnel, and school resource officers (SROs) with Kenwood radios from Vei Communications. This initiative aims to ensure that staff can communicate effectively across various locations, including playgrounds and during bus duties. The administrator recounted a previous incident where communication difficulties arose during a water main break, underscoring the necessity for reliable radio communication.
A significant feature of the proposed system is a direct channel to 911 dispatch, allowing school administrators to relay real-time information during emergencies, potentially alleviating the burden on overloaded phone lines. The upgraded radios will provide enhanced capabilities for principals and other key staff members to communicate directly with emergency services.
The board was asked to approve the quote for 25 radios, which would facilitate improved safety measures and operational efficiency within the district. The proposal reflects a proactive approach to ensuring the safety of students and staff in the face of emergencies.
