In a recent government meeting, significant financial adjustments were made to enhance the operations of various court departments. The council approved Ordinance C 36 565, which increases revenue by $712,800, primarily sourced from the Administrative Office of the Courts. This funding will support several therapeutic court programs, including the Community Court, Domestic Violence Intervention Treatment Court, Drug Court, DUI Court, and Veterans Treatment Court.
The breakdown of the increased revenue includes $282,500 for the Community Court, $251,550 for the Domestic Violence Intervention Treatment Court, $86,000 for the Drug Court, $76,350 for the DUI Court, and $16,400 for the Veterans Treatment Court. The ordinance also increases appropriations by the same amount, with a significant portion allocated for base wages and benefits, alongside funds for minor equipment, travel, and professional services.
Additionally, the council discussed Ordinance C 36 566, which involves staffing changes within the Community Justice Services department. This ordinance will remove one community justice counselor and two community justice specialists while adding positions in the municipal court department, including one community justice counselor, three community justice specialists, and one accounting clerk. The net effect of these changes results in a decrease in appropriation by $66,700, with a subsequent increase of $103,700 to accommodate the new hires.
Lastly, the council passed Resolution 20 24 78, designating Gordon Truck Center, operating as Freightliner Northwest Spokane, as the sole source provider for Detroit diesel engine parts. This resolution allows the city to enter a five-year blanket order for approximately $100,000 annually without the need for public bidding.
The meeting concluded without public comment, and the council expressed support for the proposed changes, emphasizing the importance of right-sizing the court system's budget to meet operational needs.
