In a recent government meeting, Lisa Bonny, Executive Director of the Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living, provided an update on the STRAP (Senior Tenant Relief Assistance Program) aimed at assisting senior citizens facing housing crises. Bonny expressed her initial concerns about the program's funding, which totaled $40,000, fearing it would be depleted quickly. However, as of now, only about $10,000 has been spent.

The STRAP program has been promoted extensively through social media and local senior resources, yet Bonny noted some barriers to access. Many applicants were under the age limit for the program, while others required assistance not initially covered, such as utility payments and moving costs. In response, the program's requirements have been adjusted to be more inclusive, allowing for flexibility in the types of assistance provided.

Bonny highlighted the program's success in connecting seniors with additional services, including the Helen Keller I Can Connect program, which aids individuals with hearing and vision loss. This initiative not only provides necessary equipment but also training to enhance independence.

Despite initial fears of overwhelming demand, Bonny expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the community and raise awareness about available resources. She emphasized the importance of continued outreach, particularly at events like the upcoming Senior Fest, to ensure more seniors are informed about the support available to them.
