During a recent city council meeting, the Vacaville Chamber of Commerce presented its annual report, highlighting the partnership between the chamber and the city aimed at fostering a robust local economy. Don Burris, the director of economic development services, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, requesting the council's approval for the chamber's program of work and an annual membership fee of $60,000.
Debbie Egidio, president and CEO of the Vacaville Chamber, outlined the chamber's commitment to supporting all businesses in the community, noting that approximately 85% of its membership consists of small businesses with 15 or fewer employees. The chamber currently represents around 480 businesses, a number that fluctuates with economic conditions.
Egidio detailed various initiatives undertaken over the past year, including professional networking opportunities, workforce development programs, and community engagement efforts. Notably, the chamber has been involved in a scholarship program aimed at helping individuals re-enter the workforce, awarding $8,000 in scholarships last year.
The report also highlighted the success of the \"Shop Local\" initiative, which saw a significant increase in new businesses and product offerings in the area. From July 2022 to June 2023, the number of new businesses surged from 60 to 106, marking a 776% increase.
Looking ahead, the chamber plans to continue its efforts in economic development, including a business concierge program aimed at enhancing support for local businesses. The upcoming Launchpad event for entrepreneurs is scheduled for November, further demonstrating the chamber's commitment to fostering a thriving business environment in Vacaville.
