During a recent city council meeting, Mayor Lawrence C. Hawkins III and city officials honored Marjorie Underwood Randolph for her significant contributions to the revitalization of Cameron and Underwood parks in Springdale. Randolph's generous donation of nearly $600,000 has led to extensive upgrades, including new picnic shelters, playground equipment, accessible walking paths, and improved amenities that align with the city's comprehensive and connectivity plans.
The initiative began when Randolph reached out to the city about the parks' deteriorating conditions. After discussions with city officials, a plan was developed to enhance the parks, which had been in need of attention for years. The improvements not only aim to provide recreational spaces for residents but also to foster community connections and promote physical and mental well-being.
In a proclamation presented during the meeting, Mayor Hawkins recognized Randolph's commitment to the city and her dedication to honoring her late mother, Edna G. Underwood, a former teacher and city council member. The mayor declared August 21, 2024, as Marjorie Underwood Randolph Day, celebrating her transformative impact on the community.
The revitalized parks are expected to enhance neighborhood safety, increase property values, and attract tourism, thereby benefiting the city economically and socially for generations to come.
