The recent government meeting highlighted significant updates on various infrastructure projects and staffing changes within the district.
The construction of the second-floor railing is nearing completion, with steel installation completed in July, followed by wood trim in August. Glass installation has also progressed, although two pieces remain missing due to breakage and sizing issues, which the contractor will address at no additional cost. The project is expected to be completed by mid to late September, pending the arrival of the necessary glass.
In addition, a new boiler has been installed, with final plumbing and electrical work completed. The startup process for the boiler is scheduled to ensure it is operational before colder weather sets in, and this work will not disrupt students.
The meeting also addressed a recent mold issue at Wilbraham Middle School, discovered in early August. The mold was attributed to condensation caused by high humidity levels and temperature differences within the building, which has not been updated since its construction in 1968. Currently, 13 out of 18 classrooms have been confirmed mold-free, with results for the remaining spaces expected soon. The district plans to encapsulate any remaining mold in the ventilation systems and replace damaged books, with an insurance claim filed to cover costs.
On the staffing front, the district welcomed several new hires, including Lizzie White as the assistant to finance and operations, Francine Cummings as the new payroll coordinator, and Sherry Petrakis at the front desk. The district has seen a notable increase in new hires this year, attributed primarily to retirements and a competitive job market. The meeting underscored the ongoing challenges of educator shortages and the impact of retirements on staffing levels.
Overall, the meeting provided a comprehensive overview of current projects and staffing developments, reflecting the district's commitment to maintaining infrastructure and addressing workforce challenges.
