Port St. Lucie is set to undergo significant enhancements at the Sandpiper Bay resort following a recent City Council meeting where plans for a major renovation were approved. The council greenlit an $88 million acquisition and an additional $36 million for the first phase of renovations, marking a pivotal investment in the city's tourism infrastructure.

Rebecca Miller, president of MPLD Consulting, presented the plans, highlighting the resort's transformation into a premier destination. The renovations will include extensive upgrades to the resort's facilities, such as modernized dining areas, improved drainage systems, and enhanced recreational spaces for families. The resort will temporarily close on December 6, 2024, with a reopening scheduled for July 2025.

A key aspect of the project involves addressing zoning issues related to the resort's existing school, which has been operating since 2011 without proper licensing. The council approved a change in zoning from limited commercial to commercial general and institutional, allowing the school to continue its operations legally.
