Bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death after injury, and the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is urging residents to learn how to respond effectively in emergencies. During a recent city council meeting, officials highlighted the critical importance of acting quickly when faced with severe bleeding, which can lead to death in as little as five minutes.
The LAFD introduced the ABCs of stopping the bleed: A for Alert, B for Bleeding, and C for Compress. The first step, Alert, involves calling 911 immediately. Next, for Bleeding, individuals should locate the injury and remove any clothing obstructing the view. Finally, for Compress, the LAFD advises using a clean cloth to apply pressure directly to the wound. If blood soaks through the dressing, do not remove it; instead, add another layer while maintaining steady pressure until help arrives.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the city council to empower citizens with life-saving skills and ensure community safety. As Los Angeles continues to grow, the call to action emphasizes not just dreaming of a safer city but actively participating in its realization.
