In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the current state of student enrollment across local schools, revealing a notable increase in class sizes. The district has seen a growth of 109 students compared to the previous year, bringing the total to 3,548 students, which represents a 13% increase in defined enrollment metrics.
Every elementary school in the district has reported larger student populations, with class sizes reaching up to 25 students in some instances. The only exception noted was Wildwood Elementary, where enrollment numbers have slightly decreased by two to five students. The middle school currently has an enrollment of 497 students, which is lower than expected, while the high school is experiencing a slight uptick in numbers.
Officials acknowledged the potential need for additional classroom space, particularly in grades where enrollment is significantly high. Discussions included the possibility of adding a classroom if certain grades, such as third grade, become overcrowded. The district has indicated that there are available spaces in other buildings that could accommodate such changes.
As the school year progresses, officials are preparing for the transition of students to the sixth grade, which is expected to maintain a three-section structure. This proactive approach aims to ensure that class sizes remain manageable and that educational standards are upheld despite the growing student population.
