During a recent government meeting, key discussions centered around affordable housing initiatives and the ongoing efforts of the racial equity and inclusion task force. Susan Sprague, a member of the task force and vice chair of Fort Lauderdale's affordable housing advisory committee, announced that the League of Women Voters of Broward has endorsed a charter amendment aimed at enhancing affordable housing efforts.
The meeting also highlighted the county's plans for a new development project at the former Motel 6 site in Pompano, where approximately 200 mixed-income housing units are expected to be constructed. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the pressing need for affordable housing in the area. The county is currently accepting applications from developers for this project, with hopes of fostering a mixed-use environment.
Additionally, officials discussed the preparation of a new Request for Applications (RFA) for funding authorized by the commission, which is anticipated to be released in the coming months. The county is actively engaging with multiple developers weekly to maximize funding and expedite the creation of new housing units.
Despite the productive discussions, the meeting faced procedural limitations due to a lack of quorum, preventing any formal voting on agenda items. However, the commitment to advancing affordable housing solutions remains a priority for the board and its associated committees.
