In a significant move towards innovative transportation solutions, the board of directors has authorized staff to engage in discussions with the city of Riverside to launch a two-year pilot program for electric autonomous vehicle shuttles. This initiative, which began in February 2024, aims to demonstrate cutting-edge technology within the city.
Agency staff, in collaboration with Riverside and their partner Omio, are currently working to finalize potential routes and terms of the agreement. The shuttles will operate exclusively within designated areas, including Riverside Municipal Airport, downtown Riverside, and the University of California Riverside, with service adjustments aligned with the agency's regular schedule changes in January, May, and September.
Safety remains a top priority, as each shuttle will be equipped with a safety operator to oversee operations and assist passengers. The partnership agreement outlines shared responsibilities, with both the agency and the city committing to a maximum funding of $500,000 over the pilot's duration, split into annual contributions of $250,000.
The agency will handle day-to-day operations, including staffing and maintenance, while the city will focus on promoting the service and managing the acquisition of three Ohmio shuttles. Both parties have agreed to indemnify each other against liabilities arising from gross negligence.
The pilot program has garnered support from the Amalgamated Transit Union, which emphasizes the training and experience benefits for staff involved. If approved, the board will receive regular updates on the program's progress and proposed routes for the second year.
Funding for the pilot is secured within the agency's fiscal year 2025 operating budget, with future costs anticipated in subsequent budget requests. The executive committee has unanimously recommended the initiative to the full board for consideration, marking a pivotal step in Riverside's transportation landscape.
