Doctor Kathleen Polinski, president of Valencia College, presented a compelling update on the Osceola Prosper program during a recent government meeting, highlighting its significant impact on local students. Since its inception, over 7,000 students from Osceola County's high school graduating classes of 2022, 2023, and 2024 have participated in the program, with 60% being first-generation college students.
The program has notably increased the diversity of student enrollment, with approximately 70% of participants identifying as Hispanic or Latino. As of the first day of classes, 2,127 students from the class of 2024 have enrolled, contributing to what is projected to be Valencia College's largest fall semester ever.
Polinski emphasized the transformative effect of Osceola Prosper on the college-going rate in Osceola County, which has risen dramatically from 61st to 4th in the state of Florida. This shift reflects a broader access to post-secondary education, with students engaging in various programs across multiple campuses.
The success of the program is further illustrated by the completion rates of its participants. To date, 436 Osceola Prosper students have earned associate degrees, a remarkable achievement considering that fewer than 10% of Valencia students typically complete their degrees within two years. The program has enabled students to enroll full-time, allowing them to balance their studies more effectively alongside work and family responsibilities.
In addition to academic achievements, the program has also led to substantial economic benefits for the community. Projections indicate that Osceola Prosper could generate over $85 million in added income to the local economy, alongside $17 million in tax revenue benefits.
Polinski concluded her presentation by underscoring the importance of community support for the program, which has been funded by the county for the past four years. The success stories of students like Julio, who have benefited from Osceola Prosper, serve as a testament to the program's positive impact on the lives of many in the community.
