Residents of Alpine Circle and Ocean Pines Drive expressed growing concerns over flooding issues linked to the construction of Wildwood Lane during a recent government meeting. Several homeowners recounted that prior to the development, the area experienced no flooding, with some recalling riding dirt bikes through the region without encountering water.
Tom Leclair, a resident, highlighted that many long-term residents reported no flooding issues before the construction began in 2001. He questioned the fairness of placing the financial burden of flood remediation on homeowners, especially since they purchased their properties without any prior flooding concerns. Leclair emphasized that the flooding problems began to surface only after the construction of condominiums on Wildwood Lane.
Another resident noted that significant rain events in recent years have exacerbated the flooding situation, with a notable incident occurring on June 30, where 1.12 inches of rain fell in just 45 minutes, leading to water breaches on Ocean Pines Drive and flooding in several homes. This resident expressed frustration over the inadequacy of existing drainage systems, which were designed based on outdated standards from 1987.
James Corcoran, another attendee, raised concerns about the accountability of contractors once construction projects are completed. He suggested that funds be placed in an escrow account to ensure that any ongoing issues related to flooding are addressed before the project is signed off.
The discussions reflect a growing urgency among residents for a resolution to the flooding issues, as they seek clarity on who will be responsible for the costs associated with necessary repairs and improvements to the drainage systems in their neighborhoods.
