During a recent government meeting, officials provided updates on several significant educational construction projects within the district, highlighting progress and future plans. The meeting featured presentations from two architectural firms, Wold Architects and ATSR, detailing ongoing developments at various schools.
The projects discussed include major renovations and expansions at Maple Grove Senior High, a new elementary school in Maple Grove, Osseo Senior High, Northview Middle School, and Brooklyn Middle School. Collectively, the district is managing a total of 66 projects, with the next wave of construction set to begin this fall.
At Maple Grove Senior High, the renovation aims to increase student capacity from 2,185 to 2,730, with a total project cost of approximately $56 million, supported by a $32 million partnership with LTFMD funding. The construction will be phased over several summers, with completion expected by fall 2027. The design process has involved extensive community engagement, with over 150 staff members participating in planning meetings.
The new elementary school project is designed to accommodate around 1,000 students and will feature a 125,000 square foot building, including a gymnasium. The project is also in the contract document phase, with bidding scheduled for December 2024 and completion anticipated by fall 2026.
Osseo Senior High is currently in the schematic design phase, focusing on renovations and an addition for an auto lab as part of its career and technical education offerings. The project is set to bid in February 2025, with completion expected in fall 2026.
Updates were also provided on Brooklyn Middle School and Northview Middle School, both of which are nearing completion of their respective renovations. Brooklyn Middle School's first phase is wrapping up, with further construction planned for summer 2025. Northview Middle School is also set to complete its current phase shortly.
Additionally, the district is implementing a furniture upgrade across multiple schools, with five sites receiving new furniture this summer and plans for ten more sites next summer.
The meeting concluded with a Q&A session, where board members expressed concerns about student capacity and enrollment policies, particularly at Maple Grove Senior High, which is currently over capacity. The district is evaluating its enrollment strategies as construction progresses.
Overall, the meeting underscored the district's commitment to enhancing educational facilities and addressing capacity challenges through strategic planning and community involvement.
