During a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the funding allocation for local libraries, highlighting a request for increased financial support. The board had previously adopted a budget of $644,336 for the library, which represents an increase of $65,418 from the previous year. However, Miss Goyette, a library representative, urged the board to reconsider the funding decision and include an additional $33,937 that was not approved in the initial budget.
Miss Goyette's appeal comes in light of similar funding challenges faced by the library from the city of Lexington, which also allocated less than requested for the fiscal year 2025. In contrast, Bath County and the city of Buena Vista fully met the library's funding requests for the current year. Notably, in previous years, Buena Vista had not fully funded the library, leading to significant reductions in operating hours at its branch. Fortunately, with the recent full funding, operating hours have been restored.
Miss Goyette emphasized that without the additional funding from Lexington and the county, the library would be forced to reduce operating hours at its branches in Lexington and Rockbridge, specifically in Glasgow and Goshen, for the upcoming fiscal year. The discussions underscore the ongoing challenges libraries face in securing adequate funding to maintain their services and hours of operation.
