Shannon Wofford, a veteran of the United States Navy, was recognized as the Veteran of the Month. Introduced by Milwaukee Middle School's assistant principal, Mister Turner, Wofford served from 1993 to 1997 as a Petty Officer Third Class. Her military career included stationed service in Guam and work in Korea, Japan, and Australia, where she specialized in mechanical calibration and hazardous materials response. Since 2005, Wofford has been a dedicated educator in physical and health science at Milwaukee Middle School.
In another commendation, Ramanita Cancell, a bus driver for Seminole County Public Schools for 14 years, was named the 2023-2024 Florida Bus Operator of the Year. This recognition was awarded by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other organizations for her courageous actions during a routine bus route. Cancell intervened in a suspicious situation involving a young girl and an unknown male, successfully preventing a potential abduction. Her quick thinking and proactive measures led to the apprehension of the suspect, ensuring the safety of the child.
Additionally, Missy Mercado, program manager for the Seminole County Public Schools Foundation, announced a $40,000 grant from Duke Energy to support educational initiatives. This partnership underscores the commitment to enhancing educational resources within the community.
