In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the establishment of a cemetery at the Leesburg Plaza, adjacent to the high school, following the discovery of human remains during construction. Garth Thompson from the schools outlined the plan to return the remains to the site, where they will be placed in a vault with a nearby marker to honor the individual. This initiative is in compliance with city standards, as the site is now classified as a cemetery.
Superintendent Bob Hunt emphasized the collaborative efforts with the city and the historical society to ensure the respectful handling of the remains, which had been buried at the site until 2020. A ceremony is planned to honor the individual, with details to be finalized in coordination with the community and city council.
Additionally, the meeting addressed a proposed minor subdivision at 2359 and 2367 Zollinger Road. The plan involves creating a third lot by subdividing the southern portion of the existing properties while retaining the two current residences. This proposal is in the informal review stage, allowing for community feedback before any formal application is submitted.
The discussions reflect a commitment to community engagement and historical preservation, as officials navigate the sensitive nature of the cemetery project and the potential development of residential properties.
