During a recent city council meeting, city prosecutor Rain Campbell presented a proposed ordinance aimed at addressing public urination and defecation in downtown areas. This initiative was prompted by concerns raised by local merchants and residents about the increasing instances of individuals using sidewalks and public spaces as restrooms.
Campbell explained that the new ordinance, titled Chapter 62-218, is necessary because existing laws, such as the indecent exposure ordinance, do not adequately cover these specific behaviors. The current law primarily addresses sexual offenses, leaving a gap in enforcement for non-sexual public indecency. The proposed measure aims to empower law enforcement officers to better uphold community standards of decency and morality.
Several council members expressed their support for the ordinance, highlighting its importance for the safety and comfort of residents and visitors. One council member noted that feedback from downtown business owners indicated that such incidents have deterred people from enjoying outdoor dining experiences, thereby impacting local commerce.
The ordinance is set for a first reading, with further discussions anticipated as council members consider its implications for public health and community standards.
