The first recommendation, presented by President Almiraz and Vice President Jordan, proposes increasing the maximum prison term for home invasion resulting in injury or death of Nevadans aged 60 and older from 15 to 20 years. This change aims to strengthen penalties for crimes against vulnerable seniors, expanding the list of offenses under Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 193.167 to include theft, general fraud, and violations of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. This initiative follows testimony from Mark Kruger, chief deputy attorney general, emphasizing the need for stronger deterrents against crimes targeting older adults.

The second recommendation addresses food insecurity among seniors. It suggests drafting a bill that would simplify the application process for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for individuals aged 60 and older. Proposed changes include reducing verification requirements, providing large-print applications, and allowing telephone enrollment. This recommendation was developed in consultation with various stakeholders, including the Nevada Governor's Council on Food Security.

Committee members expressed strong support for both recommendations, highlighting the importance of protecting seniors from financial exploitation and ensuring their access to essential nutrition. The meeting concluded with a unanimous show of hands in favor of advancing these proposals, marking a proactive step towards safeguarding the well-being of Nevada's senior population.
