The Sergio Service Center, a regional daytime service hub in Thurston County, is expanding its operations to better serve the growing number of individuals experiencing homelessness. Currently open from Tuesday to Saturday, the center plans to extend its hours into Sundays, addressing a critical gap in services when other providers are unavailable. This expansion is contingent on increasing staff, as current employees are stretched thin, often working overtime to meet the needs of the community.
In the past year, the center has served 795 unique individuals, with a total of 7,167 visits, averaging between 54 to 68 visitors daily. The center primarily assists single adults and couples without dependents, many of whom come from encampments or vehicles. Key services include showers, laundry facilities, and charging stations, which have become essential for those in need. However, the center is currently unable to meet the demand, often turning away individuals seeking these services.
The center collaborates with various agencies, including the Lacey branch of the Timberland Regional Library and the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), to provide comprehensive support. Their navigation team helps guests access housing, healthcare, and other essential services, including medical appointments and enrollment in food assistance programs.
While the center does not provide meals, it offers snacks and connects individuals to other local providers for regular meals. Plans are underway to establish a mental health clinic on-site, which would enhance the support available to clients.
The ongoing discussions highlight the urgent need for increased funding to expand access to vital services for the vulnerable population in Thurston County. The center's leadership emphasizes that without adequate staffing, the potential for growth and improved service delivery remains limited.
