During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on the growing popularity of pickleball and the potential for expanding facilities to accommodate this demand. A representative presented data from the parks and recreation master plan, highlighting that pickleball courts ranked sixth among desired amenities, following splash pads and playgrounds.
The representative emphasized the economic benefits of pickleball, citing the success of last year's High Desert Classic tournament, which attracted 153 players and generated an estimated $426,000 in economic impact for the city. With pickleball being the fastest-growing sport in America, having increased by over 200% in the past four years, the need for additional courts has become pressing.
Currently, there are three courts at the local country club, but concerns were raised about their potential repurposing for other community needs, such as parking or a community meeting room. The representative suggested that expanding the existing pickleball facilities could alleviate congestion, as current courts are often fully booked, leaving players waiting.
The proposal included the possibility of converting a nearby basketball court into additional pickleball courts, although this raised concerns about displacing basketball facilities, which also ranked high on the community's list of desired amenities.
The meeting concluded with a call for city officials to consider the economic and recreational benefits of adding more pickleball courts, reflecting the sport's growing significance in the community.
