In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant changes in waste management costs, particularly regarding municipal solid waste (MSW) and construction and demolition (CND) debris disposal and transportation. The discussions highlighted a projected increase in disposal rates, with costs expected to rise from $29 per ton this year to $49 per ton by 2025, marking a $20 increase for that specific service.
The officials noted that the overall disposal and transportation costs are anticipated to increase by approximately $25 per ton, with annual hikes of 3 to 5% expected thereafter. While transportation costs remained relatively stable, the choice of landfill has shifted to Greenridge RDF in Saratoga, which, despite higher disposal costs, offers lower transportation expenses. This change is expected to reduce the distance trucks travel from 250 miles to 100 miles each way, significantly impacting fuel costs and reducing the carbon footprint associated with waste transportation.
The meeting underscored the importance of adapting waste management strategies to address rising costs while also considering environmental impacts, as the community prepares for these changes in the coming years.
