During a recent government meeting, Linda Canitar highlighted the impressive achievements of local equestrians, particularly Laura Kent Kraut, who recently won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. At 58, Kraut made history as the oldest U.S. athlete to win a medal in 72 years, showcasing her remarkable career that began in Camden, South Carolina.
Canitar noted that Kraut, along with her sister Mary Elizabeth, grew up in the Atlanta area before moving to Camden in 1984, where their mother, Carol Kent, played a pivotal role in their equestrian training. Kraut's Olympic journey includes participation in multiple Games, where she has secured a gold medal in Beijing and silver medals in Tokyo and Paris. Her accolades also include being named the 2021 International Equestrian of the Year.
The meeting also recognized other local equestrians, such as Aaron Vail and Liza Boyd, who have made significant contributions to the sport at both national and international levels. Canitar emphasized the pride the Kershaw County and Camden communities can take in these athletes' accomplishments, reinforcing the region's strong equestrian legacy.
Following Canitar's remarks, Melody Harden addressed the council regarding the Pecan Orchard, marking a shift in the meeting's focus.
