Residents of San Marcos voiced strong opposition to a proposed truck terminal during a recent city council meeting, highlighting concerns over environmental impact and community safety. An attorney representing the Save Our Springs Alliance expressed deep empathy for local residents who would be directly affected by the terminal, urging the city to reject the reconfiguration of the roadway associated with the project.
The attorney criticized the plan, arguing that the annexation of only a portion of the road into city limits does not justify the extensive environmental degradation it would cause, including damage to creek land and increased pavement. He emphasized that a road primarily used by heavy trucks cannot serve as an adequate buffer for nearby residences, calling for a reevaluation of the development agreement that governs the project.
Concerns were raised about potential administrative overreach in approving amendments to land use and zoning requirements, as well as adjustments to floodplain regulations. The attorney urged the city council to address these issues before allowing further amendments that could exacerbate hazards for the adjacent neighborhood.
In a separate agenda item, the council received a positive report from Deloitte Antoosh, LLP regarding the quarterly internal audit of the Community Development Block Grant disaster recovery program. The audit, covering the first quarter of 2024, found no compliance issues or prior audit findings, indicating that the city’s financial controls are functioning effectively.
The meeting concluded with a financial report presentation, which will provide further insights into the city’s fiscal activities. As discussions continue, residents remain vigilant about the implications of the proposed truck terminal on their community.
