In a recent community meeting, local volunteers celebrated the successful completion of a project aimed at enhancing access to a scenic area along the canal in Groziel. The initiative, which included the construction of a 12 by 12 wooden deck, was made possible through a GoFundMe campaign that raised $2,010 from residents and supporters.
Prior to the build day, volunteers worked diligently to remove invasive phragmites from the property, ensuring a healthier environment for native wildlife. On the day of the build, 18 volunteers, including Boy Scouts and local citizens, dedicated eight hours to the project, which involved laying gravel, wood chips, and attempting to manage the invasive plant species with tarps.
The newly constructed deck, positioned 10 feet from the canal, offers a picturesque view of the area, showcasing local wildlife such as cranes and lily pads. The project not only enhances the natural beauty of the site but also promotes awareness and appreciation of the island's native species.
While the team is still finalizing a detailed breakdown of expenses, they expressed gratitude for the community's support and enthusiasm throughout the project. The initiative stands as a testament to the power of local collaboration in preserving and enhancing natural spaces.
