In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed the financial management of stormwater projects and parking restrictions in residential areas, highlighting significant community feedback and ongoing infrastructure improvements.
City officials reported that the city has incurred $14.1 million in debt for stormwater management, secured at a favorable interest rate of approximately 1.7% over 20 years. This debt was strategically utilized to fund the first phase of a stormwater project, which was completed within a year, demonstrating effective planning by the city council. However, additional stormwater needs remain unaddressed, as these costs were not included in the current financial plan.
The council also addressed parking restrictions in the 4100 to 4400 blocks of Amherst, which were temporarily implemented to accommodate residents during construction. Public Works Director Keegan Latrell presented survey results indicating strong support from residents for maintaining a resident-only parking district in the 4300 to 4400 blocks, with 31 out of 40 properties in favor. Conversely, feedback from the 4100 to 4200 blocks was mixed, with some residents expressing no issues with student parking.
Latrell proposed to keep the resident-only parking in place while recommending the removal of a soft closure on Loma Alto and Amherst, which had been implemented to reduce cut-through traffic. Residents voiced concerns about increased traffic in their neighborhoods due to the closure, prompting the need for further study to assess traffic patterns and potential solutions.
Community members expressed gratitude for the council's consideration of their safety and parking needs, emphasizing the positive impact of the current restrictions on street safety for children. The council plans to continue discussions on these matters, with future ordinances required to formalize the parking designations.
Additionally, a request from the Community School of Park Cities for a new loading zone was approved, allowing parents to safely drop off their children while ensuring emergency vehicle access remains unobstructed. The council's proactive approach to addressing community concerns reflects a commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and safety.
