In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the allocation of remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to support youth programs in the community. A proposal was made to utilize $25,000 from the ARPA funds to initiate a program aimed at providing meals and transportation for junior high and high school students, addressing a gap left by previous funding that only covered elementary-aged children.
The meeting highlighted the challenges faced by local youth programs, particularly after the dissolution of an evening teen center that had previously received funding. Officials noted that there were still funds set aside from earlier allocations that could potentially be redirected to support ongoing youth initiatives.
Additionally, the Youth Bureau received authorization to execute agreements with two agencies for youth development services. This included extra funding for the Auburn Youth and Family Center's summer swim lessons, which served 52 children, and additional support for the Northern Fleet Little League.
Updates were also provided regarding the upcoming Student Government Day scheduled for October 22, which will involve participation from 12 departments, a decrease from previous years due to space limitations. The event aims to engage students in local governance and will include logistical planning for transportation and a luncheon at Emerson Park.
The meeting concluded with a call for applications for youth programs for 2025, with a deadline set for October 1, ensuring continued support for youth initiatives in the community.
