During a recent Kitsap County government meeting, Eric Baker from the Commissioner’s Office addressed ongoing discussions surrounding the county's comprehensive plan and its draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). The session, which experienced some initial audio difficulties, aimed to provide a refresher on the planning process and gather input from the Planning Commission ahead of an upcoming public hearing scheduled for September 24.
Baker highlighted the importance of the DEIS comment response matrix, which documents feedback received on the draft statement. He noted that the matrix includes responses to various comments, including those from the Kitsap Alliance of Property Owners, emphasizing transparency in the planning process.
The comprehensive plan, which is updated every 10 years, focuses on three critical components: housing, climate change, and the development of vital regional and countywide centers. Baker pointed out the pressing issue of affordable housing in Kitsap County, particularly for individuals earning less than 80% of the annual median income. This concern underscores the county's ongoing struggle to meet housing needs amidst rising costs.
The meeting served as a platform for the Planning Commission to identify any additional data requirements before the public hearing, ensuring that community input is considered in the final planning decisions. The collaborative approach aims to address the significant challenges facing Kitsap County as it seeks to enhance livability and sustainability for its residents.
