In a heartfelt ceremony, the City of Laredo honored the memory of Lance Corporal David Lee Espinosa and the 12 other service members who lost their lives during the evacuation from Afghanistan at Abbey Gate Airport on August 26, 2021. Mayor Victor Trevino presented a proclamation declaring August 2024 as National United 13th Memorial Month in Laredo, recognizing the ultimate sacrifice made by these brave individuals.
The proclamation was delivered to Elizabeth Olgin, the mother of Lance Corporal Espinosa, who was noted as the last Texan to die in Afghanistan. Mayor Trevino emphasized the importance of cherishing the freedoms afforded to citizens due to the sacrifices of these heroes. He stated, “We can never repay this incredible debt, but we can honor the sacrifice by cherishing the freedoms that we have because of these honorable acts.”
In addition to the proclamation, the city also posthumously named Lance Corporal Espinosa an honorary police officer, with plans to present his family with a badge and commission papers. This gesture was made to honor his dedication and service, reflecting the community's gratitude and support for his family.
The meeting also included poignant remarks about the sacrifices made by service members, highlighting the commitment and bravery of those who serve. The city plans to commemorate the fallen heroes with a series of marches throughout August, each covering 1.3 miles to honor each of the 13 service members.
The ceremony underscored the community's commitment to remembering and honoring its heroes, ensuring that their legacy of courage and dedication continues to inspire future generations.
