The Revere Board of Health convened on August 23, 2024, to address several pressing public health issues, including a rise in COVID-19 cases and the potential threat of West Nile virus in the area. Chair Dr. Drew Bunker led the meeting, which included board members Kathleen Savage and Viviana Catano, along with key city health officials.
During the meeting, Lauren Buck, the Director of Public Health, reported a total of 106 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 28 probable cases for the month, indicating a slight increase. Buck emphasized the importance of preparing for the upcoming flu and COVID-19 immunization season, urging residents to consider getting vaccinated.
In addition to COVID-19 updates, Buck highlighted a suspected case of West Nile virus in Revere. While the city is not classified as high risk, it is categorized as moderate risk due to ongoing evidence of mosquitoes carrying the virus. Buck provided safety tips for residents, particularly for those at higher risk, including the elderly and individuals with certain medical conditions. Recommendations included using mosquito repellent, ensuring window screens are intact, and eliminating standing water around properties.
Michael Wells, the Director of Municipal Inspections, presented the inspectional services monthly report, detailing various inspections conducted across housing, food safety, and sanitation. Notably, the report included 123 violations related to litter and debris, underscoring ongoing challenges in maintaining public cleanliness.
The meeting also addressed condemnation proceedings for a property located at 364 Ocean Avenue, with legal representatives present to discuss the matter further. The board's focus on these health and safety issues reflects a proactive approach to community well-being as the city navigates ongoing public health challenges.
