The city of Attleboro is taking significant steps to enhance the Highland property, formerly known as Highland Country Club, which has served various community purposes since its purchase six years ago for $3.1 million. The property has been utilized as a staging area for high school construction, a cross country training course, and a venue for community events, including a tribute to Vietnam veterans in 2019.
In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed plans to develop a 5.496-acre section of the property, known as Lot 1B, into a mixed-rate senior apartment building. This development would include a new senior center featuring on-site medical counseling services and resources for veterans. The proposal aims to address the growing needs of the senior population while ensuring the property remains a community asset.
The city plans to retain ownership of Lot 1B through a long-term ground lease, which has been confirmed not to affect existing financial arrangements related to the property. Additionally, enhancements to the broader 86-acre Highland area are proposed, including new picnic facilities, walking trails, and solar-powered public restrooms, all designed to improve community engagement and enjoyment of the space.
The initiative aligns with the city’s broader \"emerald necklace\" project, which seeks to connect green spaces throughout Attleboro. City officials believe that these developments will not only preserve the natural beauty of Highland but also provide lasting benefits to residents and visitors alike.
In a separate agenda item, the Human Resources Director proposed amendments to personnel regulations, adding titles such as zoo curator and education curator to the uniform and clothing allowance policy. A public hearing on this matter is scheduled for September 17.
